Google AI Overviews vs. Featured Snippets: What Changed in 2026

Featured Snippets picked one page as the single winner. AI Overviews synthesize several. Here's exactly what changed, and what it means for how you write.

·

For a decade, "winning" an answer box in Google meant one thing: being the single page Google's algorithm picked to extract a quote from. AI Overviews broke that model, and a lot of SEO advice hasn't caught up.

How a Featured Snippet actually worked

A Featured Snippet is a single passage lifted from a single page, selected because that page's phrasing most directly matched the query. It's static between crawls — the same snippet shows until Google re-crawls and re-evaluates. Winning it was binary: either your page held the slot, or it didn't.

How an AI Overview works instead

An Overview is generated live, per query, by blending information pulled from several pages into one answer, with each contributing page cited individually. There's no single "winner" slot — a page can be one of four or five sources stitched into the same answer, and the wording of the final answer isn't a direct quote from any one of them.

What this changes in practice

  • Stability: a snippet persists until the next crawl; an Overview can vary from one search to the next as the model re-generates it.
  • Competition: with a snippet you compete to be the one exact match; with an Overview you compete to be one of several credible contributors.
  • Click incentive: a snippet still usually drives a click for more detail; an Overview can fully resolve simple queries, reducing the click motivation entirely.
Tip Writing for both isn't a conflict: a clear, self-contained answer near the top of the page, backed by structured data, tends to qualify for either format. You're not choosing one over the other.

Where to focus

The mechanics differ, but the underlying craft doesn't: answer directly, mark up the page, and build topical depth. See our full guide to optimizing for Google AI Overviews for the complete step-by-step process.

Apply this guide

Run an AI SEO audit before you change pages.

Use the audit to find which signal is holding the site back: crawler access, schema, llms.txt, content clarity, AI discovery, or entity strength.

  • Best for pages that need a technical and content baseline.
  • Next metric: AI readiness score plus the weakest signal category.

Frequently asked questions

Are Featured Snippets going away?

Not entirely — they still appear for many queries, particularly ones without a strong AI Overview trigger. But for a growing share of informational queries, the Overview now sits above where a snippet would have been.

Can a page appear in both a Featured Snippet and an AI Overview for the same query?

Yes, and it's common. Overviews and snippets are generated by different mechanisms, so a page well-optimized for one often qualifies for the other too, since both reward a direct, well-structured answer.
