Does HowTo Schema Still Matter for AI Search in 2026

Google scaled back the visual HowTo rich result in search a while back, and that update gets cited as a reason to stop bothering with HowTo schema entirely. That's conflating two different things.

What actually changed

The change was about one specific visual search feature losing prominence, not about the schema.org HowTo type becoming invalid or ignored. The markup itself still describes sequential steps in a standardized, machine-readable way — that description doesn't stop being useful just because one rendering surface changed.

Why it still matters for AI answer engines

A "how do I..." query is exactly the kind of question an AI answer engine is built to resolve step by step. HowTo schema hands over that step structure explicitly instead of forcing the model to infer step boundaries from a wall of prose — the same underlying benefit any structured data provides, independent of whether Google still renders a special visual card for it.

When it's not worth forcing

Don't restructure genuinely non-sequential content into artificial "steps" just to add the schema. Mismatched markup is a bigger liability than no markup at all.
